New Arsenal reserves coach Terry Burton is delighted to be have returned to his old club.

The 59-year-old, a lifelong Gooner, has revealed his unorthodox route into coaching after a lucky break during the reign of Terry Neill.

“I took my ‘prelim award’, the first coaching badge as it was then, when I was 19 and really enjoyed it,” Burton told the Official Arsenal Magazine.

“I started coaching in schools and then, when I was 22 and still playing part-time football, I was very lucky to have an opportunity to return to Arsenal and coach youngsters here.

“It came about after a chance visit to London Colney – I’d asked Gordon Clarke, the chief scout then, if I could come up and watch training. He said yes, and I drove up with my friend Terry Murphy.

“Whoever was supposed to be coaching the kids that day wasn’t there, and Gordon asked me if I’d do it. So, wearing my jeans, I took the session – and after that, Gordon asked me if I’d come in and work with the young players from September.

“It went from there – Terry Neill appointed me as youth team coach, I went on to take the reserves and then, when Don Howe took over, I became first-team coach.”
